Whitesburg Elementary School Earns AdvancEd STEM Certification

Nov 17 2017

Carroll County School System is pleased to announce that Whitesburg Elementary School has earned AdvancED STEM Certification. AdvancED STEM Certification is the first internationally recognized mark of quality for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) schools. The AdvancED STEM accreditation is awarded as a mark of STEM distinction and excellence and only offered to highly effective institutions that prioritize STEM education as a path to success. As one of the less than 2% of schools in the nation, and the only school in Carroll County, to attain this accreditation, Whitesburg joins a handful of other premier schools achieving this honor.

“Whitesburg Elementary School’s STEM programs are being compared to renowned private schools in Georgia,” said Scott Cowart, Superintendent of Carroll County Schools. “The administrators and staff are bringing advanced learning opportunities to students at a young age that will positively impact their future and prepare them to be college and career ready.”

In order to earn STEM Certification, Whitesburg Elementary School demonstrated adherence to the AdvancED STEM Standards as reflected by the school’s performance across 11 rigorous STEM Indicators. The certification process provides a rigorous evaluation and continuous improvement process, supported by research-based tools and resources. Achieving high scores across the indicators certifies that students are equipped and trained to be innovative, creative and systematic problem-solvers across disciplines.

Whitesburg Elementary has implemented unique learning opportunities for students to equip them with problem-solving skills and prepare them for success in our ever-changing world. Using 1-to-1 technology daily, students are provided with opportunities to collaborate with peers, solve real world problems and engage in hands-on activities. Technology-integrated lessons are planned collaboratively by the 100% Google certified teaching staff.

“This certification is the result of many of years of work from our entire school community. STEM has been a transformative process for our school to improve achievement in all academic areas. We have challenged our students to Think Like Engineers, and to seek out ways to continually grow and improve,” stated principal Dr. Marissa Ogando. Over the last three years, Whitesburg’s CCRPI score, a state measure of performance, has improved from 71.9% to 90.3%, due in large part to the instructional changes implemented through the Engineering Design Process.

“This is an honor shared among our staff, students and community,” added Dr. Ogando. “The dedication of our faculty, the tenacity of our students and the investment of our community, have all come together to help Whitesburg engineer success for all students!”

In addition to earning AdvancED STEM Certification, Whitesburg Elementary was the only elementary school and the only public school in the nation to be recognized this year as an International STEM Association School of Excellence.
