Prekindergarten Instruction

Carroll County Schools offers a full-day prekindergarten program to children who are four on or before September 1. The one hundred eighty day instructional program follows the same calendar as in grades K - 12. Presently, four hundred eighty prekindergarten children learn about reading, math, science and socialization through a hands-on approach at nine elementary school sites. Carroll County prekindergarten staff members, comprised of certified early childhood teachers and licensed paraprofessionals, participate in on-going training that supports use of the High Scope Curriculum. High Scope is a hands-on, active learning instructional approach that allows children opportunities to be introduced to age appropriate reading, math, science and social skills. Staff members model and teach problem solving strategies that are foundational for success throughout life. A strong emphasis of the prekindergarten program is placed upon family involvement. The prekindergarten program provides additional staff whose responsibility is to work with families of children participating in the prekindergarten program. These staff members, called Resource Coordinators, develop and conduct parental training workshops, assist parents who wish to pursue additional training opportunities, provide assistance with other familial needs, and act as a link between home and school. Information regarding Georgia's Prekindergarten Program is available at www.decal.state.ga.us.
