Questions were played with a buzzer system, similar to those on TV quiz shows. Students who finished in the top 50 percent of their age division qualified for the National Championships of each respective competition, which will be held in Orlando June 17-20. Over 2,000 students are expected to compete there.

Students who finished in the top 25 percent of their age division in the History Bee or Geography Bee also qualified for this summer’s 2022 International History Olympiad in New York City and Princeton, N.J. and 2022 International Geography Championships in Burlington, VT and Montreal.

David Madden, a former 19-day champion on Jeopardy! who is the Executive Director of International Academic Competition, oversaw the tournament.

“I was delighted to attend our Carroll County tournament on Saturday,” Madden said. “Proportionally, more students competed in our Carroll County competitions this year than in any other county in Georgia. I am deeply appreciative of the support of Ms. Jennifer Shirley, Director of Carroll County Elementary Schools, and Mrs. Courtney Rogers, Temple Elementary School Principal, for their help with making our tournament possible.

“The students today played great and displayed outstanding sportsmanship throughout the day. Next year, we hope to have even more elementary school students, as well as middle schoolers from Carroll County participate in our Geography, History, and Science Bees,” Madden said.

School participating at this year’s Carroll County Geography, History, and Science bees were:
Bowdon Elementary School, Bowdon
Central Elementary School, Carrollton
Glanton-Hindsman Elementary School, Villa Rica
Ithica Elementary School, Villa Rica
Roopville Elementary School, Carrollton
Providence Elementary School, Temple
Sharp Creek Elementary School, Temple
Temple Elementary School, Temple
Villa Rica Elementary School, Villa Rica
Whitesburg Elementary School, Whitesburg

The Carroll County tournament is one of about 75 regional-level competitions in the USA for the Regional Finals of the International Geography Bee, National History Bee, and National Science Bee (www.iacompetitions.com/ems).
