Mar 29 2022

Villa Rica Elementary School was crowned champion of the Carroll County Schools Science Olympiad March 26 as around 200 students from all 12 Carroll County elementary schools competed in 18 events. Roopville Elementary hosted the competition and took second place.

“This is always my favorite event of the year. I love to see and hear the students using their engineering minds to work together as a team to solve problems,” Carroll County Schools Director of Elementary Schools/Accountability Jennifer Shirley said. “Thank you to all the coaches, teachers, and administrators who worked so hard to make this event possible for our children.”

Pairs of competitors work together in 18 events ranging from identifying rocks and naming bones in the skeleton to building a bridge to span the greatest length while holding a 250 gram clay weight. The school with the most top finishes across all categories is declared the winner and the top four schools advance to the state tournament May 7 at Kennesaw State University.

Along with VRES and RES, Central Elementary and Glanton-Hindsman Elementary finished third and fourth, respectively, and will advance to state.
