Whitesburg Elementary School Earns Platinum Award for Student Achievement

Jan 03 2019

The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement recently recognized Whitesburg Elementary School (WES) as a Platinum Award winner in the Greatest Gains category of the 2018 Single Statewide Accountability System. WES is one of only 25 schools in Georgia to earn this prestigious award for having academic growth in the top 1% of the state for three consecutive years.

“We are incredibly proud of WES for being among the top schools in Georgia,” said Scott Cowart, Superintendent of Carroll County School System. “As Principal of WES, Dr. Marissa Ogando set very high expectations for her staff and students, and they rose to the challenge. Now, Ms. Latonya Jones and the WES team are building on the foundation of excellence to continue to offer students a premier education.”

Dr. Marissa Ogando, Director of Accountability and Professional Learning added, “This award reflects the tireless efforts and commitment to excellence from the Whitesburg staff. Whitesburg is a leader in the nation for STEM and innovative teaching practices. As a result, the students of WES are afforded the opportunity to be critical thinkers and active contributors to their community through service projects. The staff and community of Whitesburg ensure that academic excellence is paired with an attitude of serving others and being socially responsible. I am so proud to have served as the principal of this great school and look forward to watching Whitesburg continue its journey to excellence through innovation and character development. Whitesburg is truly #1ofakind.”

WES is currently the only school in the nation to be triple STEM certified, which includes national and international certifications. In addition, the Georgia Department of Education recently named WES a Title I Distinguished School, and Principal Magazine will be featuring Whitesburg in their March/April edition.
