Whitesburg STEM Gems Take Part in 2018 Skype-a-Thon

Nov 13 2018

The Whitesburg STEM Gems club participated in Microsoft’s 2018 Skype-a-Thon, joining an estimated half a million students from over 100 countries who took part in this event. During the Skype-a Thon, which took place on November 13-14, participants connected with Yanni Robel, a Security Technology Manager for Microsoft. Ms. Robel shared with the students her journey from a school in Indonesia to a STEM career in Seattle. In addition to offering to mentor the students if any decide to pursue a STEM career, she also offered them one piece of advice: Stay curious!

More than just providing a learning experience for the students, the Skype-a-Thon also serves as an outreach. For every 400 virtual miles traveled by Skype-a-Thon participants, Microsoft will make a donation to WE, an organization that provides educational assistance for underdeveloped countries. Whitesburg is proud to be a part this worthwhile event.
