100 percent Nationally STEM certified Every School!

With the completion of three final schools this spring, all traditional K-12 schools in the Carroll County School System are now certified by the National Institute for STEM Education!

NISE-certified STEM campuses have implemented 21st-century learning and strategies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics that transform school culture and maximize student achievement. Only 2 percent of schools in the nation are STEM certified by NISE.

Carroll County Schools began an emphasis on STEM in 2018 and has continued to develop and invest in STEM concepts, resources, strategies and technology. The district is now the largest in the nation with STEM certification of all school campuses.

“We continue to invest in STEM learning because we know it makes a difference in student learning and prepares them for the workforce of tomorrow,” Associate Superintendent of School Performance Dr. Jessica Ainsworth said. “Our mission is for students to graduate ready to be enrolled, enlisted or employed, and STEM concepts make a powerful impact in preparing them for the future.”

Evolving from STEM professional development and curriculum created at Rice University, the National Institute for STEM Education certification process integrates the most recent research and best practices in STEM, 21st-century learning, and professional development. By using a self-paced, mentor-led approach, NISE certifies teachers, campuses, and districts in STEM teaching.

"This milestone reflects a systemic dedication to cultivating environments where innovation is not merely encouraged, but embedded in the fabric of teaching and learning," Director of Professional Learning, Assessment, STEM and Instructional Programs Cheryl Clark said. "Carroll County students will continue to engage in transformative learning experiences that challenge them to think beyond traditional boundaries and approach problems through the lens of creativity and innovation."

Clark has been championing STEM certification at the district level since 2022.

"These enduring learning experiences will equip students with future-ready skills, ensuring Carroll County students are immersed in rigorous, interdisciplinary opportunities that foster the essential competencies of collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity," she said.
